Updates for July 2010

15th – 18th July: Design:Made:Trade [link], part of State of Design Festival

17th July: ‘Melbourne Charm School‘, part of State of Design; this workshop is presented by Kevin Murray (of Craft Unbound; and has run a similar workshop in Chile), in conjunction with Social Studio and Pieces of Eight; 10am-5pm; bookings limited

17th July: opening of Sterling, the retail store of Gaffa Gallery [link] “Sterling is a dedicated contemporary jewellery and object retail store, situated in the heart of Sydneys CBD. Sterling is located on the ground floor of the gaffa gallery creative precinct in the original ‘enquires room’ of the heritage-listed c.1891 Clarence St Police Station. Sterling profiles some of the most promising emerging jewellery makers, as well as showcasing, glass and ceramics from Australian artists and designers.

19th – 21st July: Association for Contemporary Jewellery conference ‘Crossings‘, London; “this conference will explore the crossing points, intersections and collaborations that feed and stimulate exchange, debate and the development of new ideas and directions within contemporary jewellery practice.” [link]

23rd July: last day for application to City of Greater Dandenong Walker Street Gallery Emerging Artist Award [link]

25th July: last day for Jam Factory, Stephen Gallagher ‘Dreams of Arcadia’ [link]

30th July: last day for application for exhibition as part of MAC-ITAMI International Craft Exhibition, Japan [link]; “The theme of 2010 ITAMI International Craft Exhibition is Shuki-Shuhaidai (a service for drinking sake).

31st July: last day for submission to be included in Studio 20/17 Christmas Showcase (see my previous post)

1st August: Open day for Monash University (Caufield) [link] – though note that it was commented on a recent post that Monash did not have a first year intake for jewellery in 2010, so it would be interesting if this is the case again for 2011?

4th August: last day for application to Griffith City Council 2010: National Contemporary Jewellery Award [link]; acquisitive prize of $5000

4th August: Melbourne Art Fair, Royal Exhibition Building; “an exhibition of leading contemporary art, presented by over 80 selected national and international galleries. The biennial event features paintings, sculpture, photography, installations and multi media art works of over 900 artists” [link]; until 8th August

5th August: Craft Victoria ‘Craft Cubed‘ [link]; “the theme is Childhood. Artists have long engaged with issues associated with childhood, and it is a particularly relevant query today as to what constitutes childhood – how do the different forms and phases of childhood affect the arts, and what is the importance of play?“; until 6th September

6th August: ‘Jewellery Practice as a Site for Enquiry‘ [link; link] seminar at RMIT; “This one-day seminar is designed as an opportunity to examine how the parameters of contemporary jewellery practice are being tested, developed, challenged and/or contested by those makers researching or practicing in the field. Organisers are interested in reflecting the breadth of models for framing practice and opening the dialogue around recent concerns such as; sustainability, relational aesthetics and performative practices, temporal or site-specific works.

6th August: Mari Funaki ‘Objects‘ exhibition at NGV Ian Potter Centre [link]; until 24th October

6th August: Gallery of South Australia ‘Gray Street Workshop: 25 Years’; “presents the work of well-respected South Australian jewellers and object-makers Catherine Truman, Julie Blyfield and Leslie Matthews” [link]; until 5th September

6th August: last day for application to the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize [link]

8th August: Open day for RMIT (city) [link]

8th August: last day for Studio 20/17 (Sydney) Rosanne Bartley ‘The world is a circle we live in – excerpts of experience‘ [link]

10th August: Gallery Funaki, David Neale and Emma Price [link]; until 4th September

10th August: last day for Gaffa Keeper Gallery (Sydney), ‘First and Last‘ [link]; “20 Contemporary Jewellers, emerging and established, recount their tales as they reminisce about their beginnings and contemplate the next direction in their careers. The exhibition will consist of the first piece and last piece that these Jewellers have made and very literally tells of stories about where these makers have come from, where they have been and ultimately where they are heading.

11th August: RMIT G&S Jewellery Auction; at The Order of Melbourne, Swanston St; preview from 6pm, auction from 7pm [see my post on last year’s auction, and many of my jewellery collection were bought at previous auctions – so excited to see what the RMIT makers are up to!]

28th September – 2nd October 2010: Museums Australia fourteenth annual Museums Australia National Conference, ‘Interesting Times: New Roles for Collections‘ [link]; “The conference will be of interest to everyone involved in collecting organisations and institutions of all sizes across the museums sector including staff,  boards and management committees, funding bodies, researchers, students and volunteers from museums, art galleries, libraries, archives and universities.

Thank you for mentioning our RMIT Gold & Silversmithing Jewellery Auction!

Just letting you know that we (the graduating G&S class of 2010) are currently seeking donations of work from makers who’d like to support us – all proceeds go towards the end of year exhibition and the exhibition catalogue, and will be acknowledged in them.

We now have a website which has all the information, the invitation letter to donate with details, and will also have images of work for sale within the next couple of weeks. It is here:
