On the radio

17 05 2012

In connection with the NGV ‘Unexpected Pleasures’ exhibition (which I’m hoping I can actually get to next week!), yesterday ABC Radio National showcased a conversation on contemporary jewellery: “The Panel looks at the craft of jewellery making and its role in contemporary life”.

There are some lovely images on their site page too – worth visiting just for that!

Conversation contributors were Susan Cohn, Julia Deville and Christopher Menz.

No, I haven’t listened to it yet – I will soon and perhaps write some thoughts about it.
I’d like to hear your thoughts too – if you want to share that is….

“Beau Sancy” diamond

27 04 2012

In diamond news …. oh I know, we’re all SO flush we can consider such flippant purchases …

THE 400-year-old Beau Sancy, one of the world’s oldest and most-storied diamonds in private hands, is up for sale at Sotheby’s auction house.

Weighing in at 34.98 carats, the sparkling pear-cut gem is estimated to be worth up to $US4 million ($3.87 million).

Those who don’t have the money to buy the jewel can see it on display ahead of next month’s sale.

Cut from the famous gem mines in the Indian city of Golconda, the diamond made its way through four royal European families and once belonged to Queen Marie de Medici of France.

Melbourne “more cosmopolitan”

17 04 2012

Oh no no – not my own words.

News says: “Melbourne is “more cosmopolitan” than Sydney when it comes to the best in jewellery, says the visiting director of high jewellery for Bulgari Rome.

This is of course jewellery with a very specific audience … yes, with lots of money.

I wonder if their sales suggest higher average sales price in Melbourne than Sydney? Or even why this statement was made? Interesting … but only barely.
