‘Lend me Your Ears’ set 2 @ Mailbox 141

6 04 2011

As I mentioned in the previous post, there were two groups in the ‘Lend me Your Ears‘ exhibition at Mailbox 141.

Unfortunately I left my visit a little late – mainly because I had seen beautiful images of much of the work in the Part B exhibition blog, and there has been much going on lately. (the exhibition closed last Friday) My visit was on a very cloudy miserable day, so the lighting was dim and my camera uncooperative!

  • mine [post on Part B blog] – the artist who was originally going to take this place in set 2 was unable to, so my piece stayed for the second set too

Lend me Your Ears‘ was a Part B exhibition at Mailbox 141 from 1st March to 1st April 2011.

Update (19th April): Mary Hackett has published some truly beautiful (and clear and focussed!) photographs of this exhibition on her blog.

I am very much looking forward to the next group of artists, showing from 18th March to 1st April 2011.

Making ‘Earring for Giovanna’

4 03 2011

I have thoroughly enjoyed making ‘Earring for Giovanna‘ for the Part B Lend me Your Ears‘ exhibition at Mailbox 141 (throughout March 2011).

When I was asked to be part of it, I didn’t have a lot of time for ideas or making … perhaps five or so weeks. This worked out well for me actually, because it meant I didn’t over-think it.

The initial description I received from Part B people was: “following a format that (curator) Dianne has used before successfully, so we’re asking for you to produce (or co-opt) a postcard and also make an earring (or two) for display in these tiny little spaces. Each artist will get a single mailbox in which to insert their postcard and piece(s)“.

Immediately I thought of the postcards I bought when I was travelling in Spain last May. The one of Giovanna was the most appealing to me.

Surprising, the design came very quickly – the first drawing in fact was the right one.

The shape of the blackened silver back-piece, and the red donut-shaped front-piece, references the button and loop on her arm sleeve. The woven component is something I just love doing, and it made sense to me as it referenced the fabric and colouring of her garments.

More making ahoy …

‘Lend me Your Ears’ opens today!

1 03 2011

An exhibition that I’m so proud to be part of opens today.

Lend me Your Ears‘ opens at Mailbox 141. The works are by participants and supporters of the Melbourne jewellery gathering group Part B.

Exhibition media: “lend me your ears addresses the small site of the ear, in a showcase exhibition of jewellery for the ear supported on ironic postcard works, found, or artist generated. The exhibition installation adopts the suite of 19 original mailboxes converted to deliver engaging artworks at MAILBOX 141, an address resonant with decades of Melbourne’s fashion, design and art associations. The exhibition will changeover midway to accommodate two sessions, representing 38 contributing jewellers.

I am part of the first 19 exhibiting group. Our work will be there until 17th March. There will be a changeover, so that there will be a whole new set of 19 artists’ works from 18th March for the remainder of the exhibition.

The official opening night celebration for the first group is on Thursday 3rd March 5:30 – 7pm. There is talk of a possible second opening night – will post details when details are finalised.

Lend me Your Ears‘ is at Mailbox 141 until 1st April 2011, and is part of the L’Oreal Fashion Festival.

My piece is below: ‘Earring for Giovanna

I’ll write more about it in the near future…

There are many amazing jewellers also participating … see the exhibition media below for the full listing.
